Driving home for Christmas? Take care on the road this Winter.

When the winter weather comes along, driving can get a bit more challenging for us all. So, how can you make sure that you’re prepared if the snow and ice come along? It’s simple, just make sure to consider the following:

Be mindful when driving in the dark

  • The days get shorter, and sometimes we face driving in the dark on both ends of a commute. It’s important to drive slower than usual, as poor visibility means not being able to see other road users or hazards until the last few seconds.
  • Make sure that you’re taking regular breaks in night conditions as the risk of falling asleep at the wheel is also greater.

Always make sure to prepare ahead

  • Making sure the windscreen and wiper blades are in working order and that the screen wash is topped up.
  • Checking the tyres for any damage to the tyre walls such as cuts, cracks or bulges. Tyre grip becomes seriously reduced when it’s icy out, so making sure that your tyres are free of any damage is essential.

Put together an emergency kit to keep in your car

  • Keeping an emergency kit in the car may not seem as though it’s a priority, but you’ll certainly thank yourself for it if you ever find yourself stuck at the side of the road in a car with no heat and power. Warm clothing, boots, a blanket, a fully charged portable phone charger and anything else you may need if you find yourself waiting for assistance.
  • Don’t forget your insurance documents, including any contact information for emergency claim hotlines.

Check the weather before you set off

  • Decide if the journey can be postponed, in case floods and storms are scheduled.
  • The last thing you need is to be in a rush in icy conditions, make sure to give yourself some extra time for your journey and stick to main roads, where possible.
